Standard 1

Historical Understanding: Change, Continuity, and Causality

Causality- The principle that every effect implies the presence of a cause.

Cause and Effect- When an event occurs that has an impact on other things, such as people, places or things.  Noting a relationship between actions or events such that one or more are the result of the other or others.

Change- To transform or convert, usually over time. To become different, to be

altered or modified.

Continuity- Continuous or connected whole.

Culture- a particular form or stage of civilization; the behaviors and beliefs

characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group.

Distinguish- to recognize as distinct or different.

Economics- The study of how people seek to satisfy their wants and needs by

making choices about ways to use scare resources.

Explain- To make known, or to make clear, to render in detail. To give details on a

subject to further advance the understanding of a topic. To go into details.

Historical- Events, or a custom or style from the past, pertaining to history or past

events. Occurring or prominent in history.

Historical Chronologies- Historical events that are arranged in an order based upon

when the event in time took place.

History- The record of past events and times, especially in connection with the

human race.

Modern- characteristic of present and recent time; not ancient or remote.

Political- of, pertaining to, or concerned with politics.

Primary Source- Any document or artifacts that is direct evidence of historical

events including clothing, furniture, homes, recordings, documents and

photographs.

Secondary Source- Books, articles, interviews, media productions, or any other

historical sources that seek to explain and interpret an event after the fact. The

writer is not an eyewitness to, or a participant in the event.

Social- pertaining to human society, including the life, welfare, and relations of

human beings in a community.

Structures- Anything composed of parts arranged together in some way; an

organization.

Temporal- Pertaining to the present life or this world; enduring for time only;

temporary, transitory.

Timelines- A graphic means of displaying historical events in chronological order.

Understanding- The mental process of a person who comprehends personal

interpretation and knowledge of a particular thing.
